Expand Your Brain

What I mean by this is to learn how to learn in new ways. That way, when you come across a problem that your brain would have previously struggled, you will have new ways to break it down. One of the best ways is to start to learn a new language. Or, if you want to keep it simpler still, start doing crosswords, Kakuro and Sudoku puzzles.

Exercise

memory depends on how well your brain is functioning and how well your brain is functioning depends on how well you are feeding it. The brain takes roughly 17% of the Oxygen in your body so you need to get physical exercise each day to get the blood flowing. Even a 30 minutes walk is better than being inside. If you are super-productive you could even use this walk to do something like learn through an audio program.

Sleep

This is a real big one, an absolute essential. Apart from the actual memory techniques that you use (which are statistically likely to be pretty poor until you have read about my program) good sleep is vital. Let me ask you this. Have you ever been awake for a long period of time and realised that your memory recall and concentration go down? You need to get a good quality 7 hours per night. Experiment with getting up and going to sleep at certain times to find what suits you best. Many scientists believe that we form and solidify our memories during sleep and this is why we need to get good deep sleep.

The Nine Squared Enigma That is Sudoku

For millennia people has been drawn to things that vexed their minds. Riddles, word and number puzzles - if they involved intense thought they have been adored. The 1970's saw the widespread love (perhaps for some love-hate) relationship with a simple block containing rotate-able smaller square blocks of different colours called the "Rubik Cube". This year the head scratching, hair pulling and downright addictive game of choice is a Japanese creation by the name of Sudoku.

Like the vast majority of great puzzles Sudoku appears seemingly benign, a simple grid of nine squares, each square containing nine smaller squares (equalling eighty one small squares in total). The nine large ("mother") squares are typically considered to belong to one of the three grids of the puzzle known as regions. Each of the eighty one small squares contains, or will contain upon completion, a numeral between the numbers one and nine.

Even the rules of this game - which sprang to mainstream life in Japan in 1986 - seem relatively straightforward. In order to "win" at Sudoku you must fill in each region, column and row of the grid, no blank spaces can remain. Yet the difficulty begins to factor in when you take into account the rule that says that each of these areas can only contain the number (one through nine) once. Some of the squares already contain numbers, these are referred to as "givens", it's the player's job to fill in the empty spaces, whilst adhering to the rule of "one occurrence" for each number in each of the three directions of the puzzle.

Interestingly numbers are really only used for the sake of convenience, as they have no mathematical bearing on the game itself*. They needn't add up to any sum, or occur in any particular set of patterns. In place of numbers the puzzle can contain shapes, colours, symbols, whatever, as long as the same rule (that each one only appear once in each area of the puzzle) can be applied. Perhaps the allure of the Sudoku lies in the fact that it appears so easy, what's hard about filling in a few squares, right? Yet one try at this game, and all but the most seasoned logistical puzzle pros will find themselves in a little over their heads. Which isn't to say that the game can't be completed, on the contrary it can, and after a while Sudoku "pros" are able to complete a puzzle in a matter of minutes. But this takes work, a lot of work, study and devotion to this unique Japanese square.

The world has certainly jumped on the Sudoku bandwagon, its popularity generating websites (which often feature many free puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty), and regular Sudoku puzzles in many magazines and newspapers, even Sudoku software! With an appearance similar to a crossword puzzle and strategic manoeuvring reminiscent of chess it's no wonder that Sudoku has sprung forth from Japan and taken on as an international obsession.

*In actuality Sudoku does have a mathematical principle behind it known as the "complexity theory", which classifies Sudoku as a "NP-complete (Non-deterministic Polynomial time) puzzle (or problem)". The "NP" means that a puzzle/problem with this classification is the most difficult problem of its kind to solve. It is a very complex form of math that does not as of yet have a definitive arithmetical solution for each and every Sudoku grid.

How To Solve Sudoku Puzzles - Tips On How To Win At Sudoku Quickly And Easily

Since its development a few years ago in a Japanese publication, Sudoku has taken the world by storm, reshaping the crossword puzzle page in a thousand different newspapers. The relatively simple seeming number puzzle is an astoundingly relaxing, mind sharpening exercise that millions play every day. Learning exactly how to solve a Sudoku puzzle though is something else entirely. Sudoku can be a hard game if you don't have an inkling of how it works.

First off, a basic description - Sudoku is a consisted of a 9 by 9 grid. There are nine highlighted boxes of nine smaller boxes within that grid. Within each box and within each row there must be each number from 1 to 9, written only once to solve the puzzle.

For example, if you have the number 2 in the first two rows of a Sudoku grid, you know that a 2 must appear in the third row, more specifically in the only box of nine that does not have a 2. Learning how to solve Sudoku puzzles, means you must be able to find patterns like this easily, looking beyond a simple set at times, three or four levels deep.

One tip many people use when teaching how to solve Sudoku puzzles is to pencil in each of the numbers that could possibly go in each square, crossing each of them out as they're ruled out. This makes it easier later on to see which numbers have already been used.

Another good tip is to look for any row or box that only has two or three blank spots. You can usually decipher one or two and then the row is complete. Once you have eight spots in a row or box filled in, the ninth number should be obvious, since each number can only appear once.

There are dozens of different methods people use to solve Sudoku puzzles, many of them much more complicated than others, depending on the difficulty of any given puzzle. You can compare the rows to each other and mark down each possible answer in a given box, or track a number carefully throughout the puzzle, by comparing every row to every other row, known as crosshatching.

Of course, describing how Sudoku works in words is incredibly hard. How to solve a Sudoku puzzle best is to simply sit and practice many, many puzzles as often as possible. There are dozens of methods that work wonders for different kinds of thinkers. Most of all, remember to use logic and above all else, patience in solving your puzzles or you might start entering the wrong numbers too early. When that happens, you may as well toss out the puzzle and start over, because every other answer you get could be wrong.

KenKen Puzzles - The New Sudoku

You many have just heard of KenKen. It's the invention of a Japanese math teacher named Tetsuya Miyamoto, who says, "I believe that if you give children good learning materials, they will think and learn and grow on their own." Imagine that!

KenKen is a brilliant puzzle which takes the logic of a sudoku puzzle, and adds the use of basic arithmetic to make KenKen a truly fascinating challenge on many levels.

But you don't have to be a math whiz to play KenKen. The rules are truly easy to learn. A typical grid has 16 squares, with four rows and four columns. Just as in sudoku, you must use the digits from one to four in each row and in each column. You cannot repeat a digit in a row or column.

KenKen has the additional trait that some groups of squares are bounded together by a bold border. Within those squares is a number, say 6, and a mathematical operation sign, say a plus (+) sign. That simply means that the digits in those squares must add up to the number 6.

If you'd had the number 15 with a multiplication (x)sign next to it in two squares bordered in bold, you'd know that the digits that go in those squares must multiply to 15.

Simple enough? Yes, it is - even a second grader can start doing KenKen puzzles. That's how easy it is to begin. But the level of play can get tougher - much tougher.

KenKen can be played on grids of 6x6 squares, or 8x8, or even 9x9 squares.

Filling in the 81 cells of a 9x9 grid can take hours, or days. Or more! Once you start though, you'll find the time to do KenKen. You won't be able to stop! Your mind will learn so much logic and arithmetic, without you even noticing.
